Great American Smokeout

Thursday November 17th marks the American Cancer Society’s 36th annual Great American Smokeout. Every year, the ACS urges people to stop smoking or to plan a target day to stop smoking. Check out the Great American Smokeout website at www.cancer.org to find helpful tips and planners to get moving on a healthier life.

Woollybear Festival 2011
It was great seeing everyone at the Woollybear Festival in Vermilion this year. All of us at Whispering Pines Dental had a fantastic time and wanted to put some photos up of our booth. Enjoy!

Dental Anxiety
Dental anxiety is common among most of our patients. According to the Journal of the American Dental Association, “An estimated 35 million Americans experience significant apprehension about dental procedures, while an additional 10 to 12 million are considered to be “dental phobic” and avoid needed dental care altogether” ….

…There are some ways to help deal with the stress of the situation.

Dry Mouth

Patients with dry mouth have to take extra measures to prevent cavities from occurring. Without saliva to wash away food products and bacteria that cause tooth decay, these patients really need to be extra attentive to their oral hygiene routine.

Nightguards
The most common types of professionally fabricated nightguards that I recommend for my patients are the full coverage hard co-polyester with soft polyurethane inner layer or the NTI. The full coverage mouthguard can be warmed under hot water prior to placement to make wearing it more comfortable. The NTI style bite splint covers just the anterior (front) teeth making it easier to tolerate for those who have the tendency to gag.

Some home water filtration systems (like reverse osmosis and distillation) also remove the fluoride in the community water supply, so make sure to do research before installing a filtration system. The optimal concentration of fluoride in drinking water is 0.7-1.2ppm.
