Great American Smokeout
Thursday November 17th marks the American Cancer Society’s 36th annual Great American Smokeout. Every year, the ACS urges people to stop smoking or to plan a target day to stop smoking. Check out the Great American Smokeout website at www.cancer.org to find helpful tips and planners to get moving on a healthier life.
According to the ACS, tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet more than 46 million Americans still smoke. The majority of those diagnosed with oral and throat cancers are tobacco users. Tobacco users also have higher rates of periodontal disease and therefore tooth loss. Smoking also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Other side effects of smoking that we discuss daily in our office are bad breath, stained teeth, and altered sense of smell and taste. If you smoke, you may also notice fine lines around your mouth from the continuous puckering motion involved with smoking.
The average cost of a pack of cigarettes in Ohio is $6.22 making the annual cost for a pack-a-day smoker upwards of $2,200! So quit smoking today and get healthy!
