Oral Health During Your Pregnancy

During your pregnancy, you have so much to think about, but don’t forget about your oral health. Because of all the hormonal changes you will experience during pregnancy, women are more likely to develop gingivitis – an infection of the gums that can cause swelling, tenderness, and bleeding. When left untreated, gingivitis can begin to affect the tissues that hold your teeth in place. Also, frequent snacking may increase your risk of developing tooth decay. Always on your teeth, plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that converts sugar and starch that remain on the teeth into acid that attacks tooth enamel. The longer the sugars remain in your mouth the longer the acids attack, which can lead to tooth decay.

To combat these issues during your pregnancy, be sure to continue coming to our office for oral examinations and professional teeth cleanings. Make sure to let us know that you are pregnant and any oral health changes you’ve noticed. Also, be sure to let us know of any changes in your medications. Most importantly, good daily dental hygiene is your key to overall oral health. Make sure you are brushing your teeth thoroughly at least twice daily and be sure to floss between your teeth once a day. Feel free to ask your hygienist about the proper technique for brushing and flossing.

Oral health and overall health are linked, untreated dental disease can affect you and your baby. Be sure to include your teeth and gums in your daily routine and keep our office informed of any changes to your oral health during your pregnancy. If you are pregnant, congratulations! We look forward to being a part of this amazing milestone in your life.
